Effectiveness of phosphorus control under extreme heatwaves: implications for sediment nutrient releases and greenhouse gas emissions

چکیده

Abstract Eutrophication has been identified as the primary cause of water quality deterioration in inland waters worldwide, often associated with algal blooms or fish kills. can be controlled through watershed management and in-lake measures. An extreme heatwave event, its impact on mineralization rates internal nutrient loading (phosphorus—P, nitrogen—N), could counteract eutrophication control We investigated how effectiveness a abatement technique is impacted by an heatwave, to what extent biogeochemical processes are modulated exposure heatwaves. To this end, we carried out sediment-incubation experiment, testing lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) reducing nutrients greenhouse gas emissions from eutrophic sediments, without heatwave. Our results indicate that LMB may compromised upon event. This was evidenced increase concentration 0.08 ± 0.03 mg P/L overlying volume 863 21 mL, equalling 11% increase, effects lasting end experiment. application generally showed no effect nitrogen species, while stimulated nitrification, resulting ammonium loss accumulation dissolved oxidized species well increased nitrous oxide concentrations. In addition, carbon dioxide (CO 2 )-equivalent more than doubled during relative reference temperature, had mitigating them. sediment incubation experiment indicates significantly accelerated exposure, change fluxes between water. The current efforts will face challenges under future climate scenarios frequent intense events predicted IPCC.

Policy Options for Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Implications for Agruculture

The pace of activity around climate change legislation picked up noticeably in 2007. The increased focus brought new legislative proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). These bills include cap-and-trade systems, and carbon taxes1 as well as energy bills that promote energy efficiency or renewables (Table 1). Many also include support for research and development for emission reduci...

Feedlot efficiency implications on greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability.

The term sustainable has many meanings, but in agriculture it generally refers to some balance between environmental, social, and economic goals. The objective of this project was to quantify inputs and outputs to assess the sustainability implications of 2 feedlot cattle management systems: Never Ever 3 (NE3) and a conventional (CON) system using metabolic modifiers. Angus-cross steers (n=104)...

Population under a Cap on Greenhouse Gas Emissions

A cap on greenhouse gas emissions makes total emissions a fixed commonproperty resource. Population increases under a cap are therefore self-limiting: a population increase raises labor and reduces emissions per unit of labor, which lowers incomes and fertility. Because a marginal birth under a cap lowers all incomes, a cap induces a negative population externality. The externality is substanti...

Reducing Australia’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Interim targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are essential to put Australia on track toward the deep emissions cuts required by 2050. This report fi nds that by 2020, emission reductions of greater than 30 per cent below 1990 levels are possible, but only with a wide range of concerted actions in the energy, industry and land-use sectors. If the contributions from energy effi ciency in th...
